Cheap & Easy DIY Cat Collar (Minimal Sewing)
Introducing my adorable new kitty, Goji! When I couldn’t find a collar with the cute fruit/vegetable prints I envisioned, I decided to take matters into my own hands and make one myself. With a few supplies and a simple tutorial, I was able to create a collar for Goji in just 15 minutes.
Before you begin, read through the directions and check out the tutorials I used for a better understanding of the process. It’s important to know which way to face the hardware before sewing to avoid any mistakes. I also recommend using darker material or something more durable for adventurous cats like Goji.
Materials:
- Cat collar refill set (I used Creative Designworks, LLC for their affordable and high-quality options)
- Fabric of your choice (15″ x 1 1/2″)
- Iron
- Sewing machine OR needle and thread (choose a thread color similar to the fabric)
- Stitch witchery
- Damp cloth
Instructions:
- Cut your fabric into a 15″ x 1 1/2″ piece. Fold it in half lengthwise and iron to mark the middle.
- Open the fabric and fold each side lengthwise to the middle line. Fold it in half lengthwise again and iron to keep the sides down.
- Place a piece of stitch witchery between the collar, on the sides with the open ends of the inward folds. Iron the collar closed in increments along its length. Use a damp cloth and steam to press for 10 seconds. Follow the instructions on the stitch witchery box for proper usage. Repeat this step until the entire collar is sealed.
- Allow the collar to sit and dry for a few minutes, allowing the stitch witchery to harden and secure the collar.
Now it’s time to add the hardware. I recommend watching a tutorial video by Caninedesign.us for a step-by-step demonstration. The hardware is designed to fit comfortably around your cat’s neck, so pay attention to ensure it is attached correctly. Pin the pieces together first to double-check the final product.
I hope you enjoy making your own DIY cat collar! Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram and comment on the collar post for a chance to win a collar kit. Good luck and happy crafting! đź’•
