I have a Catit Flower Fountain for my two adorable cats. The concept of a water fountain for cats may seem unusual, but it has proven to be incredibly beneficial. Not only does it help keep my cats hydrated, but it also prevents various health issues that can arise from inadequate water intake.
One day, I had a thought. I wondered if I could create a DIY uninterrupted power supply (UPS) for the water fountain. Imagine the situation: I’m at work, and a power outage occurs, leaving my cats unable to access water. Since they’ve become accustomed to the fountain, they no longer show much interest in traditional water bowls. To explore this idea, I decided to test it using some battery banks I had on hand.
To my surprise, it wasn’t as straightforward as I had hoped. When I connected the water fountain to different power banks using the USB power adapter that came with it, the fountain would work for a while and then unexpectedly turn off. This occurrence didn’t concern me much at the time. However, I did notice that two of the power banks I used started malfunctioning during regular use in other situations.
Months later, I attached an IKEA power strip to the side of my work desk for convenience. It had two USB type A ports, so I figured it would be an ideal spot to plug in the water fountain temporarily. Interestingly, I noticed that the fountain became quieter. The usual “hum” it produced was almost non-existent. Intrigued by this observation, I decided to connect the fountain to the original adapter again, and the familiar “hum” returned.
Curiosity got the best of me, prompting me to examine the specifications of the original power adapter. I wanted to determine if there was any difference in the amount of current provided by the two different USB power sources. However, much to my surprise, I discovered that the power adapter that came with the fountain outputs a solid 7.5V. To verify this, I used my trusty multimeter, which confirmed a voltage reading of 7.71V. In contrast, USB type A ports typically provide around 5V, with a maximum of 5.25V based on real-world observations.
The revelation hit me like a ton of bricks. Supplying 7.5V over a USB type A connection is not safe for other devices, especially since most people perceive a USB port on an adapter as a universally safe option for charging their phones or other gadgets. While properly implemented USB type C ports can negotiate various voltages, this particular scenario is not supported.
This realization shed light on the odd behavior of my power banks, which began glitching out and malfunctioning.
As a cat owner, this discovery made me pause and reflect.
