Understanding the Importance of Cat Hydration: A Story of My Cat Water Fountain
I have a Catit Flower Fountain for my two adorable cats. The concept of a water fountain for cats may seem unusual, but it has proven to be incredibly beneficial. Not only does it help keep my cats hydrated, but it also prevents various health issues that can arise from inadequate water intake.
One day, I had a thought. I wondered if I could create a DIY uninterrupted power supply (UPS) for the water fountain. Imagine the situation: I’m at work, and a power outage occurs, leaving my cats unable to access water. Since they’ve become accustomed to the fountain, they no longer show much interest in traditional water bowls. To explore this idea, I decided to test it using some battery banks I had on hand.
To my surprise, it wasn’t as straightforward as I had hoped. When I connected the water fountain to different power banks using the USB power adapter that came with it, the fountain would work for a while and then unexpectedly turn off. This occurrence didn’t concern me much at the time. However, I did notice that two of the power banks I used started malfunctioning during regular use in other situations.
Months later, I attached an IKEA power strip to the side of my work desk for convenience. It had two USB type A ports, so I figured it would be an ideal spot to plug in the water fountain temporarily. Interestingly, I noticed that the fountain became quieter. The usual “hum” it produced was almost non-existent. Intrigued by this observation, I decided to connect the fountain to the original adapter again, and the familiar “hum” returned.
Curiosity got the best of me, prompting me to examine the specifications of the original power adapter. I wanted to determine if there was any difference in the amount of current provided by the two different USB power sources. However, much to my surprise, I discovered that the power adapter that came with the fountain outputs a solid 7.5V. To verify this, I used my trusty multimeter, which confirmed a voltage reading of 7.71V. In contrast, USB type A ports typically provide around 5V, with a maximum of 5.25V based on real-world observations.
The revelation hit me like a ton of bricks. Supplying 7.5V over a USB type A connection is not safe for other devices, especially since most people perceive a USB port on an adapter as a universally safe option for charging their phones or other gadgets. While properly implemented USB type C ports can negotiate various voltages, this particular scenario is not supported.
This realization shed light on the odd behavior of my power banks, which began glitching out and malfunctioning.
As a cat owner, this discovery made me pause and reflect. It highlights the importance of not only providing the right tools and accessories for our pets but also being cautious and informed consumers. It’s crucial to understand the specifications and safety considerations of the products we purchase, especially when it comes to devices that interact directly with our beloved pets.
Common Cat Behavior Issues and Solutions
Cats, like any other animals, have their quirks and unique behaviors. However, there are instances when certain behaviors become problematic or cause concern for cat owners. Let’s explore some common cat behavior issues and potential solutions.
1. Scratching Furniture:
Cats often scratch furniture out of instinct, which can be frustrating for owners. This behavior can be redirected through proper training and the provision of scratching posts or boards. By mimicking the texture of furniture and placing them strategically around the house, cats are more likely to focus their scratching on these designated areas.
2. Excessive Meowing:
Excessive meowing can be a sign of various underlying issues. Cats may vocalize excessively due to stress, boredom, or even health problems. It’s important to observe their behavior and consult with a veterinarian to rule out any medical conditions. Engaging in interactive play, ensuring environmental enrichment, and providing regular companionship can help alleviate excessive meowing.
3. Inappropriate Elimination:
Cats may occasionally eliminate outside of their litter boxes, causing frustration for owners. It’s crucial to address this issue promptly by examining the possible reasons behind their behavior. Factors such as litter box cleanliness, location, and the number of litter boxes available can influence a cat’s elimination habits. Additionally, stress or health issues could be contributing factors. Identifying and addressing the root cause is vital in resolving this problem.
When dealing with feline behavior issues, it’s crucial to consider the cat’s environment, social interactions, and overall health to pinpoint the root cause of the problem. By addressing the underlying issues, we can create a harmonious and fulfilling environment for our feline companions.
